I. The essential oil extraction industry has a market size exceeding RMB 10 billion and is in a phase of rapid growth.
Essential oils are an ancient form of fragrance, and numerous folk tales recount their remarkable properties, lending them an air of mystery. Due to their high cost, they were often a luxury reserved for royalty and the aristocracy.
With advances in science and technology, humanity has deepened its research into essential oils, expanding their applications far beyond traditional uses. From high-end perfumes to everyday personal care products and a wide array of nutritional supplements, essential oils can be found in virtually every category. For example, peppermint oil, whose main component is menthol (also known as menthol crystal), has been scientifically proven to offer numerous therapeutic benefits and is widely incorporated into pharmaceuticals, health supplements, functional foods, and everyday consumer goods. In addition, hundreds of other essential oils—such as eucalyptus oil, rose essential oil, tea tree oil, cinnamon oil, and rosemary essential oil—each boast distinct health-promoting properties.
The cultivation, processing, and application of essential oils have evolved into a massive industry, with annual global consumption measured in the hundreds of thousands of tons. Widely used oils such as eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil each account for annual usage exceeding tens of thousands of tons. According to statistics and forecasts from MarketsandMarkets, the global market for essential oil raw materials is expected to reach US$2.83 billion by 2023.
China’s plant essential oil industry is experiencing rapid growth. According to data from the Zhongyan Puhua Industry Research Institute, between 2016 and 2019, the sector’s output increased from 56,900 tons to 86,400 tons, with a compound annual growth rate of 14.9%.
II. China’s essential oil processing industry is large in scale but lacks strength.
China is one of the world’s richest countries in terms of spice‑plant resources, with spice plants distributed from south to north and comprising more than 400 species belonging to 62 families. Among these, over 120 natural spices are already produced on an industrial scale. China ranks first globally in annual output of many widely cultivated essential oils, including peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, Litsea cubeba oil, cinnamon oil, and anise oil. In 2019, China exported 10,228.67 tons of eucalyptus oil, worth RMB 1.317 billion, and 7,495.97 tons of menthol and other peppermint‑derived extracts, valued at RMB 1.439 billion.
Leveraging its abundant natural resources, China has become a major producer of essential oils; however, the industrialization of the essential‑oil processing stage remains relatively underdeveloped. Conventional methods typically rely on rudimentary earthen‑stove distillation or semi‑industrial batch‑type tank蒸馏, both of which suffer from poor working conditions, high labor intensity, low production capacity, low yields, and inconsistent product quality. These shortcomings drive up the price of essential oils, thereby objectively limiting their broader applications.
For China’s essential oil industry to achieve further growth, it must rely on technological advancement to enhance efficiency in processing, addressing such challenges as low yields, poor productivity, severe pollution, and inconsistent product quality. The industry needs a company with robust technical capabilities and a strong commitment to innovation to assume this responsibility and lead the sector toward greater scale and strength.
