Peppermint oil is a colorless or pale yellow, clear liquid. It has a distinctive cooling aroma and a taste that is initially pungent and then cool. With prolonged storage, its color gradually deepens. It is commonly used to repel mosquitoes and insects and to relieve physical fatigue.
Introduction to the Herbal Material and Preparation Method: This product is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the fresh stems and leaves of Mentha haplocalyx, a plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family, with a typical yield of 0.3%–0.6%. After further freezing and partial de‑mentholization—removing 45%–55% of the menthol—the resulting volatile oil is known as peppermint oil.
Menthol oil is typically subjected to fractional distillation to remove the head and tail fractions; this process imparts distinct characteristics that give rise to different styles of menthol oil. The fraction obtained after removing the bulk of the menthol oil is sometimes referred to as terpene‑free oil. Physical properties: This product appears as a pale grass‑green liquid or a clear, pale yellow liquid. It solidifies into a solid upon slight cooling.
It exhibits a strong minty aroma and a cool, slightly bitter taste. With prolonged storage, its color gradually deepens. This product is completely miscible with ethanol, chloroform, or alcohol. It possesses a pure, rich mint fragrance, with a pungent yet cooling character and pronounced penetrating power. At lower temperatures, abundant colorless crystals precipitate out. Over time, the color darkens and the consistency becomes increasingly viscous. It is readily soluble in water and fully miscible with alcohols, ethers, chloroform, and other solvents.
Identification: Add 1 drop of this product to 3–5 drops of sulfuric acid and a small amount of vanillin crystals; an orange‑red color should appear, which turns purple upon the addition of 1 drop of water. Relative density: 0.888–0.908. Optical rotation: Place this product in a 1‑dm tube and determine according to the prescribed method; the value should be −17° to −24°. Refractive index: 1.456–1.466. Color test: Compare this product with an equal volume of Standard Yellow No. 6 solution; the color shall not be darker. For chemical constituents and pharmacological actions, see the entry “Mentha.” Taste and nature: According to the Great Chinese Medical Dictionary, “pungent, cool, non‑toxic.” Functions and indications: An aromatic, flavoring, and carminative agent. It may be applied to the skin or mucous membranes to produce a cooling sensation, thereby alleviating discomfort, particularly pain. Usage and dosage:
Mint is administered orally, 0.02–0.2 ml per dose, with a daily total of 0.06–0.6 ml. Store protected from light, tightly sealed, and in a cool place.
